Phylogeography of the black rat (Rattus rattus) colonization in Madagascar
a case study

The objective of this study was to depict the colonization of Madagascar and neighboring
islands (Grande Comore, Mayotte and Reunion) by the black rat (Rattus rattus).
We used genetic markers (mitochondrial DNA sequences) and phylogeography methods.

The results indicate a colonization of Madagascar a few thousand years ago, probably from
Oman and involving a single efficient establishment event. Results are consistent with human
history as it was expected for a commensal species such as the black rat.
